Beyond Backlinks: How AI and Relevance Are Changing Digital PR

Fresh from the Digital PR Summit, we’re sharing the biggest shifts shaping the industry right now. From moving beyond link-chasing to focusing on real business impact, to how AI is transforming search visibility – this post breaks down the core themes you need to know. Expect takeaways on data storytelling, market-specific strategies, and what journalists actually want from a pitch in 2025.

Relevance over volume, every time

One well-thought-out idea that genuinely connects with a brand and its audience will always beat a bunch of generic campaigns. Whether you’re pitching to journalists or aiming to build links, it’s all about quality and relevance. It’s a good reminder to go beyond the surface and ask, “Why does this matter right now?” With the growing importance of EEAT, it’s essential that your campaign content aligns closely with the client’s brand and the broader topic. Relevance isn’t just a bonus — it’s a critical part of the ideation process.

Relationships still count – just in a different way

Journalists’ inboxes are more crowded than ever, and with PR now playing a vital role in SEO strategies, their time is incredibly limited. You might not be catching up over coffee these days, but relationships are still a big deal. What’s changed is how we build them. Being trustworthy, quick to respond, and consistently adding value is what helps you stand out in a packed inbox. Being genuinely helpful is more important than ever.

Time to rethink what success looks like

Several speakers challenged the fixation on link volume and DA scores. The clear message was, it’s time to look beyond those numbers. Metrics like branded search growth, domain authority and actual business results tell a much more meaningful story. This is where PR can really prove its value.

Use data well – but keep it clear

Data can still be your best friend when it comes to telling a standout story. But it’s often either overdone or not used to its full potential. Whether it’s internal figures, surveys or publicly available stats, the key is how you use it. Cut the fluff and focus on what’s interesting, surprising or genuinely useful.

Tailor your approach for each market

What works in the UK won’t always land in the US or Australia. If you’re working across markets, it’s crucial to understand regional differences in media preferences, tone and timing. Local insight is what gets you coverage.

AI is shaking things up

AI is already changing how we search, and that means Digital PR has a big part to play in shaping how brands show up online. Mentions, citations and topical authority are becoming even more important in helping search engines (and AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity) understand what your brand is all about.

Your pitch makes all the difference

One thing journalists agreed on: a good pitch can make or break a story. Timing, clarity, exclusivity and strong sources are what get you noticed. If your pitch is confusing, off-topic or just plain dull, it’s heading straight for the bin.

Final thoughts

We left the summit feeling inspired about where Digital PR is heading. The focus is shifting towards smarter, more strategic campaigns that go beyond chasing links and actually make an impact. We’re excited to bring this thinking into our work at House Digital and keep pushing for results that really matter.
