On the Road: What Two Conferences Told Us About Where AI and Commerce Are Heading

Rachel Birch & Andrew Turner  ·  House Digital  ·  June 2026

We’ve spent the last few months on the conference circuit, and it’s been a useful reminder that the conversations happening across different sectors are converging on the same point. Whether the room is full of retailers, jewellers, or marketing leaders, the question is becoming the same: How do you build visibility in a world where AI is increasingly doing the searching, comparing, and buying?

Two events stood out, and here’s what we took from each.

SHOPPER INSIGHTS CONFERENCE 2026

Agentic commerce is no longer a theory.

The Shopper Insights Conference was a good gauge of where brand and retail thinking are at. The room was full of people who understood shopper behaviour deeply, and increasingly, those conversations are being shaped by AI.

Andrew and I delivered our session, “When AI Agents Become the Shopper: Winning Digital Shelf Visibility in the Era of Agentic Commerce.” The core argument was straightforward: AI isn’t just influencing the purchase journey anymore. In an increasing number of cases, it’s acting within it, curating options, making recommendations, and in some markets, completing the transaction on the shopper’s behalf.

That shift has real implications for how brands think about the digital shelf. Visibility to a human shopper scrolling through search results is a different problem to visibility to an AI system evaluating which product to recommend. The signals are different, the infrastructure requirements are different, and the timeline for action is shorter than most businesses realise.

“Visibility to a human shopper and visibility to an AI system are different problems. The signals are different, the infrastructure requirements are different, and the timeline for action is shorter than most businesses realise.”

What struck us in the conversation that followed was how quickly ‘Agentic Commerce’ has moved from something people were vaguely aware of to something they’re actively trying to plan for. ChatGPT launched in platform shopping in October 2025. Google followed in January 2026. Both are now live in the US, with full UK availability expected later this year. The window to prepare is narrowing.

Three questions are worth asking right now:

  • Can AI crawlers actually read your product pages: pricing, specs, reviews, or is that content locked inside JavaScript?
  • Does your brand have the external authority signals: editorial coverage, backlinks, forum presence, that LLMs use to establish trust?
  • Is your product content deep and conversational enough to answer the kinds of questions AI search is now fielding on your customers’ behalf?

RETAIL JEWELLER FESTIVAL 2026

Heritage and discoverability are not in conflict.

The Retail Jeweller Festival is a different kind of room. The jewellery sector places enormous value on craft, heritage, and storytelling, which made the panel, “Intelligent Futures: How AI is Reshaping the Jewellery Sector,” an interesting one to be part of.

The conversation ranged across generative design tools, predictive demand modelling, and personalised customer engagement. All of these are meaningful. But the area we were most focused on was simpler and more immediate: how discoverable are jewellery brands to AI systems that are increasingly fielding purchase intent queries on behalf of consumers?

This is not a future problem. Consumers are already using ChatGPT, Google’s AI Mode, Perplexity, and similar tools to research purchases, asking questions like “What’s the best engagement ring under £2,000?” or “Which UK jewellers offer lab-grown diamonds?” The brand that appears in those answers is not necessarily the biggest or most established. It is the one whose digital presence is most legible to the AI systems doing the searching.

“The brand that appears in AI search answers is not necessarily the biggest or most established. It is the one whose digital presence is most legible to the AI systems doing the searching.”

That’s a genuinely interesting dynamic for an industry built on provenance and trust. A jeweller with 150 years of heritage can lose ground to a newer brand with better structured product data and more authoritative third party coverage, not because the AI is wrong, but because the older brand’s digital infrastructure doesn’t communicate what it knows about itself.

The good news is that the jewellery sector has natural advantages here. Rich storytelling, detailed craftsmanship information, strong brand narratives, loyal customer communities, and editorial coverage in trade and lifestyle press are all signals that LLMs value. The challenge is making sure that content is technically accessible and properly structured, not buried in JavaScript or locked behind image carousels.

To give the sector a clearer picture of where things stand, we’ve published our Jewellery Market Visibility Report, analysing 55 UK jewellery brands across both traditional search and AI driven discovery. The findings make for interesting reading, and they highlight just how much variation there is between brands that appear to be at a similar level of market maturity.

The thread connecting both conversations

Whether you’re a retailer planning for the shift to Agentic Commerce or a jewellery brand trying to understand your AI search visibility, the underlying challenge is the same. The rules of discoverability are changing. Traditional SEO, while still important, is no longer sufficient. Brands need to think about how accessible, authoritative, and content rich they appear to AI systems, not just to human searchers.

That’s not a reason to panic. It’s a reason to audit, understand, and act. The brands doing that work now will be significantly better placed when Agentic Commerce hits the UK later this year.
